Functional mushrooms, explained
Cordyceps, reishi & the mushroom squad
TL;DR
Functional mushrooms are edible fungi with bioactive compounds — mainly beta-glucan polysaccharides and triterpenes — that interact with the immune system, energy metabolism and stress response. Cordyceps is the 'up' mushroom, reishi the 'down' one, and lion's mane the focus one.

How it works
- 1
Extract
Hot-water / dual extraction pulls beta-glucans and triterpenes from tough fungal cell walls.
- 2
Gut
Beta-glucans are recognized by immune receptors (Dectin-1) lining the gut.
- 3
Signal
Immune cells adjust their activity — modulation rather than simple 'boosting'.
- 4
Specialize
Cordyceps: cellular energy (ATP). Reishi: calming triterpenes. Lion's mane: NGF.
- 5
Routine
Benefits in studies appear with consistent daily use over weeks.
Cordyceps: the energy mushroom
Cordyceps became famous when Chinese runners credited it during record-breaking 1993 seasons. Modern research is more modest but interesting: small trials of Cordyceps (Cs-4 strain or mushroom blends) have reported improvements in oxygen uptake (VO2 max) and time to exhaustion, especially after several weeks of use.
Its proposed mechanism involves cordycepin and adenosine-like compounds that may influence cellular energy production. Moo-mentum pairs 200 mg cordyceps extract with GABA, ginkgo, L-glutamine and DMAE for caffeine-free get-up-and-go.
Reishi: the calm mushroom
Reishi (Ganoderma lucidum) has been called the 'mushroom of immortality' in traditional Chinese medicine for two thousand years. Its triterpenes are bitter compounds studied for calming and sleep-supporting effects in animals; human data on fatigue and wellbeing is small but encouraging.
Udder Calm adds L-theanine, lemon balm, passion flower and valerian — botanicals with their own traditional use for relaxation — at low, gentle doses.
Why a blend?
Different mushrooms bring different compound profiles. Shroom Squad uses ten fruiting-body extracts at 10:1 concentration — 250 mg is roughly equivalent to 2.5 g of dried mushroom. Herd Vitality focuses on four (lion's mane, shiitake, chaga, maitake) at 87 mg each.
Shroom Zoom puts four of them — lion's mane (30 mg), maitake, cordyceps and shiitake — in a dissolving chocolate strip, the lowest doses in our range: a quick, caffeine-free desk habit rather than a clinical-dose supplement.
Honest take: per-mushroom doses in gummies are lower than in most clinical trials, which typically use 1–3 g of extract. Think of gummies as an easy daily habit and stack with Big Brain Mane capsules if you want lion's mane in the studied range.
