The relaxation mineral
Magnesium Glycinate & sleep
TL;DR
Magnesium is a cofactor in 300+ enzyme reactions, including those that regulate GABA (your brain's 'brake pedal') and melatonin. Glycinate is a gentle, well-absorbed form — and the glycine it's bound to has sleep research of its own.

How it works
- 1
Absorb
Glycinate chelate is absorbed via amino-acid pathways — less laxative effect.
- 2
GABA
Magnesium supports GABA-A receptor activity → nervous system calms.
- 3
NMDA
Magnesium blocks NMDA receptors → dampens excitatory signaling.
- 4
Glycine
Lowers core body temperature slightly, a cue for sleep onset.

May support an easier wind-down and more restful sleep.*
Most of us don't get enough
U.S. dietary surveys consistently show roughly half of adults consume less magnesium than recommended. Stress, intense exercise, alcohol and caffeine all increase losses. Leafy greens, nuts, seeds and whole grains are the best food sources — and modern diets light on them leave a gap.
Why glycinate?
Magnesium comes in many forms. Oxide is cheap but poorly absorbed and notorious for sending you to the bathroom. Citrate absorbs well but also has a laxative effect. Glycinate binds magnesium to the amino acid glycine, which improves tolerance and adds a second sleep-supporting compound.
In a small double-blind trial in older adults, 500 mg/day of magnesium for 8 weeks supported sleep efficiency, sleep onset time and melatonin levels. Separate trials found that 3 g of glycine before bed improved subjective sleep quality and next-day alertness.

| Compound | Mootropic | Studied range |
|---|---|---|
| Elemental magnesium | 275 mg (65% DV) | 250–500 mg |
| Glycine (bound) | ~2.2 g | 3 g |
⏰ When to take it
- 30–60 minutes before bed.
- Pairs well with a consistent wind-down routine (dim lights, no doomscrolling).
👍 Great for
- Trouble switching off at night
- Athletes with muscle tension
- Anyone with low magnesium intake
⚠️ Cautions
- People with kidney disease should not supplement magnesium without medical advice.
- Separate from certain antibiotics and bisphosphonates by at least 2 hours.
- Upper limit for supplemental magnesium is 350 mg/day for adults unless directed by a clinician.
